Music for Carolyn

I don’t know very much about music, so I’m not going to try to sound all fancy and intelligent and whatever. I’ll just give you my 2005 playlist (as in, stuff I discovered/RE-discovered in 2005. Not stuff that was released in 2005. Which I can’t keep up with to save my life. And I’m cutting it to what can fit on an 80 minute disc, so we’re talking, approx eighteen tracks here. Which means, of course, lots of stuff will be left off. Please don’t leave comments like “What do you MEAN blahblah by Whoever isn’t on your list! Are you DEAF? Blaaaah-di-dah,” ‘cause I don’t respond very well to those comments. They totally damage my calm (to quote the movie Serenity which I saw the other night [and really wanted to like because I love high-action chick-Kung-fu Sci-Fi] but totally didn’t like at all even though it had great dialogue like “Don’t damage my calm”).

1. Modern Girl, Sleater-Kinney
2. Why, Andrew Bird
3. The Promise, When in Rome
4. Don’t Speak, Leela James
5. Anyone Else But You, Moldy Peaches
6. Heartbeats, Jose Gonzalez
7. Sea of Love, Cat Power
8. Tsunami, Res
9. Would You …, Touch and Go
10. Polaroid Millenium, Superior
11. Hide and Seek, Imogen Heap
12. In My Life, Beatles
13. So Happy, Scotty Karate
14. Be Be Your Love (Live at KCRW) Rachel Yamagata
15. Funky Liza, New Orleans Nightcrawlers
16. If That’s Your Boyfriend (he wasn’t last night) Meshell Ndegeocello
17. Listen to Your Heart, DHT
18. This Mess We’re In, PJ Harvey and Thom Yorke

although the list is for carolyn, i think i'll check it out.
also, for no real reason, i think you'd like regina spektor. not because i like her, but because she plays a mean piano and can sing like a weird fiona apple/tori amos/janis joplin hybrid. and her songs are funny as often as they are serious. "chemo limo" and "the ghost of corporate future" on soviet kitsch are my favorites, but just about everything of hers is good.
if you like her already, that's great.
if you've heard of her and don't care for her brand of crooning, that's cool too.

i've been reading. and journaling. and missing class and anticipating fic. 2.

you have wonderful taste in music. The songs that i do know are songs that i listen to over and over again. You claim that you don't know much about music, but that doesn't matter.
So you didn't like Serenity, but enjoyed the dilogue. Maybe you didn't like it cause you knew it was written by Joss Whedon who's the creator of Buffy (the show?_ and maybe you don't like that show, so their's an added stigma to the movie. or not. Who knows. (side note: he also wrote the first toy story movie.)

PS,
and yes, everyone knows about your blog. Don't be surprised. 0_0

I'm going to check it out too. I LOVE LOVE LOVE that Andrew Bird song. (As well as a few more of them.) I saw him live and that song made me fall in love with him!

Glad to hear your holidays are going well. I send my regards to Mojo and Christopher, too.

I don't recognize all the songs, but the ones I do are definately AMAZING (and I have a slight reputation for being a music elitest). I remember after first hearing the words to Modern Girl, I ended up sending text messages and e-mails to like everyone I know, telling them about how I bought a TV and a Doughnut.

Niki: Just downloaded some Regina Spektor. Thanks for the rec.
Ralph: I LOVED Buffy! That's why I RENTED Serenity! I wanted to like it so much! My friend Jeff said it was really a TV series and I should rent that 'cause the plots too complex for two hours ... what do YOU think?
Ashely: I saw him live, too! Twice: once years ago at the Gene Siskel Film Center doing a live soundtrack to a silent film (saw Califone that night, too, which is another badass band that I should put on a list somewhere). Anyhow, that was waaaay back in the day, before Andrew Bird was ANDREW BIRD. Then I saw him open for Ani last year and was blown away again.
Sam: Modern Girl is my 2005 track, hands down.

DUDE!!!!

thank you! :)

p.s. give Mojo a new year's smooch from me. i just spent 12 days with my parents' dog who was VERY UNHAPPY when i left this morning. i miss her already!!
