Yes, I do

So I picked up a brunch shift last Sunday and a guy at table twenty-one said, “You STILL work here?” which, FYI, is never a good thing to say to your server because it implies that they’re only a server when, in fact, they’re probably using this whole serving gig to support something else—like kids or art or tuition or loans or an upcoming mortgage—and they’ll want to justify themselves like, “Yes, I’m still waiting tables here at this brunch restaurant but that’s not ALL I do, I also do this (insert resume),” but I didn’t say that to the guy at table twenty-one. I said, “Yes, I do,” because I don’t know him and he doesn’t need my whole life history, he needs a Bloody Mary and an Eggs Benedict, and I don’t need his approval, I need his twenty-five percent tip and his ass out of that seat so I can turn the table.

Sing it, sister!

Hey Megan! It's Melissa from Fiction II a few semesters ago. I still read your blog sometimes, and just wanted to say hi...

I know what you mean about the job thing, though. I've worked at the same movie theatre for almost three years now, and most of the employees are teenagers who come and go during their Christmas and summer breaks while home from college. They keep coming and going, but I stay put, not because I want to, but because I go to an expensive school and I have loans coming out of my ears and I can't find any other job that will work with my weird hours.

I think these people would maybe start to appreciate us if suddenly there was no one there to bring them food and nowhere for them to go to watch bad movies and eat bad popcorn.

Sigh.

Hope all is well.

Megan, I just posted about this topic today...from the awareness point of view. You illustrate it perfectly. Thanks for sharing this story in the descriptive way only a writer can. I look forward to reading more of your posts.
